Hayle Harbour Regeneration

exhibitions

Display material from the public exhibition held at the Passmore Edwards Institute in August 2009

A public exhibition of ING Real Estate’s plans for South Quay was held at Hayle’s Passmore Edwards Institute on 19 & 20 August with the objective of gauging people’s views on the new proposals including the plans for a foodstore. Over 450 members of the public visited the exhibition and nearly 200 feedback questionnaires were completed.

Overall there was clear support for the plans with less than 30% seeing no benefit to Hayle in a foodstore on South Quay.

It is also clear that the vast amount of food shopping for local people is undertaken in other centres some distance away from Hayle, creating a major leakage of spend from the town and increasing mileage driven considerably. The comments received during the public consultation have assisted ING in the detailed design process and have enabled areas of concern on a number of core themes to be addressed including:

  • Visual setting of the development and general views across the harbour
  • Making the most of a derelict site and creating public access
  • Maintaining access for moorings and keeping existing users
  • Providing a wider public amenity
  • Maximising the benefits for jobs and local economy
  • Local traffic and access issues around The Foundry/Penpol Terrace
  • Ensuring scheme is compatible with World Heritage Site designation
  • Responding positively to the Quay’s listing and the need for structural repairs
  • Providing a range of retail and leisure uses to increase the town’s attraction
