ING announces the transfer of Historic Harbour assets to the community

After months of discussion with organisations in Hayle, ING can announce plans for the transfer of a number of Harbour assets to the Community.

The timing of the announcement coincides with a critical period in the Harbour regeneration and it is hoped that residents and stakeholders will now get a more complete understanding of how much change is planned for Hayle Harbour.

The Point at South Quay

The spectacular views from The Point at South Quay in Hayle Harbour will be protected forever thanks to a unique project which involves bringing the area into public ownership for the benefit of the people of Hayle.

The Point at South Quay will be a fully restored, high-quality space at the end of the Quay which will be gifted to the community and monies raised by events held on The Point will go towards community projects.

The Point will have arts, music and theatre uses and will be a unique potential location for special events such as farmers markets and Christmas Fayres.

"The Point at South Quay is a breath-taking location and will be a natural magnet for tourists and a great place for locals to meet and enjoy the harbour. I am delighted we can now secure these assets for the Community." Explained Tim Armstead from ING.

The Railway siding and Historic Sand Trap

These assets include the Railway siding and sand trap, which were earmarked for development by former harbour owners Rosshill for housing. ING is in the process of gifting the land to the Community as part of its agreement with Cornwall Council. Under a licence granted to the Hayle Harbour Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee, formed to develop as much of the harbour area as possible for the benefit of the people of Hayle, work started on Sunday to clear the area around the siding. Volunteers and local companies loaned time and equipment and worked all day to start the process of transforming the location into a pleasant station walk and unique historic location with the intention of speeding the process of bringing the land into public ownership.

The Harbour Spit and Town Beach

ING has also been in detailed discussion with the Trust over a similar scheme to improve the Harbour Spit, adjacent to Carnsew Pool, as a community resource. Previously plans for the Spit put forward proposals for car parking –but a new scheme currently being considered includes the restoration and reuse of Town Beach.

Town Beach was for many years the locals' beach – a safe, quiet haven only accessible from Foundry. The Beach became difficult to use as the access became overgrown and was plagued by fly tipping.

The Social Enterprise Cinema and Café Hub on South Quay

"We are pleased our plans for South Quay include a Two Screen Digital Cinema and Café Hub which would like to be run by a Social Enterprise. The Café and Cinema will be located at the entrance to South Quay and will have a high prominence. We are also looking to construct the building for the Cinema for free and to provide the Enterprise with an extended free of charge ground rent to ensure the venture is a success."

The Harveys Pattern Building

ING also confirmed that the former Harveys Pattern building and Cart Shed which are in their ownership will be gifted to the Harvey Foundry Trust.
