Historic Sand Drag and Station walk to be preserved in joint initiative between Hayle Harbour Trust and ING

ING and Hayle Harbour Trust are working on a unique restoration project to bring back to life the Railway Siding and Historic sand drag, which have remained untouched for thirty years.

Railway Siding & Historic Sand Drag Renovation & Restioration Project

Plans put forward by former Hayle Harbour owners Rosshill to develop 70 Houses on the site have been axed by ING who will instead transfer the land to public ownership.

The Hayle Harbour Trust will act as stewards for the scheme, which will bring this disused historic area back to life.

The Sand drag is particularly interesting to local historians as the drag was used by Railway men to halt carriages when they broke loose on the gradient down to the port.

The Railway siding is a well known short cut to the railway station and it is hoped that by making the area more attractive more people will use the path, visit the sand drag and enjoy the wildlife and fauna on either side of the walk.

ING has proposed that the Heritage Trust move forward with a Public Right of Way application, which would confirm public access rights and allow the footpath to be linked to other trails in the area.

It is also hoped that communications with Network Rail might be successful in reopening the entrance to the station platform.

Work started in earnest on clearing the Railway siding and the historic sand drag on Sunday January 9th. Approximately 20 volunteers turned up during the day to assist the works. ING would like to thank all the volunteers and the very kind support from local businesses. A full list of those who have helped or assisted will be published on this website shortly.
